Local Governments and Human Rights: Invitation to a dialogue with the United Nations and contribution of the Committee to the UCLG World Congress

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the UCLG Committee on Social Inclusion, Participatory Democracy and Human Rights have the pleasure to invite interested local governments representatives to a meeting next June 17 at Geneva’s Palais Wilson. This event will count with the participation of OHCHR’s Deputy High Commissioner, Kate Gilmore.

This meeting will bring together representatives from local governments as well as from various bodies of the UN human rights system. It will focus on presenting local government priorities and concrete actions, as well as to explore common challenges.

This meeting will seek to strengthen the global visibility of local authorities committed to the protection and promotion of human rights. It will also help deepen the relations between local authorities, UCLG and the Committee, OHCHR and, more broadly, the United Nations, with regard to defending human rights at the local level.

Short after the Palais des Nations event, the City of Geneva will host a second meeting, aimed at defining the Committee’s strategy towards the World Congress of UCLG (Durban – eThekwini, 11-15 November). This will be a good occasion to assess the co-creation of a roadmap between local governments and partners in favour of the human rights-based approach on the occasion of the largest international meeting of local government networks.

Please find attached the concept note of the morning event at the Palais Wilson, as well as the concept note of the afternoon event at Geneva's City Hall.

We invite you to contact our Secretariat for more information on how to participate in this consultation.
