The XIV Conference of the International Observatory of Participatory Democracy, will take place in June 3rd, 4th and 5th, 2014, at the city of Canoas, Brazil, organized by Canoas City Hall, Brazil, in the quality of President of the International Observatory of Participatory Democracy – IOPD for the 2013/2014 period, in partnership with Barcelona City Hall, Catalonia, current Technical Secretary of IOPD.
The city of Canoas, located in the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, possess a public management focused on the citizen, with a citizen and popular participation system composed by ten participation tools, which made the city a national and international reference. Canoas exercises currently the National Coordination of the Brazilian Network of Participatory Budgeting and coordinates the Thematic Unity of Autonomy, Management and Participation of the Mercocidades Network. On the international ambit, Canoas held the III World Forum of Peripheral Local Authorities – FALP in June 2013, with the participation of representatives from 30 country and 200 local governments from all the continents, and is currently the Executive Secretariat of FALP Network.
The XIV Conference will have as theme “The Radicalization of Democracy and Citizen Participation” and will happen when the Participatory Budgeting celebrates 25 years of existence, intending to join local authorities, public managers, organizations, entities, civil society, researchers and academic of all continents to discuss and think the construction of a more democratic society.
The meeting will be structured under six working themes:
- Management Focused in the Citizen;
- Transparency and Information;
- Social Networks and New Tools of Participation;
- Innovation and Creative Processes in Democracy;
- Collaborative Cities: Participation and Economic Development
- International Connections: the Role of Networks and Global Spread of Participatory Democracy
