The Rosario Declaration backs local government as a guarantor of citizens’ rights

The 19th Mercociudades Summit, held in Rosario, Argentina, from 3 to 5 December, saw the passing of the Rosario Declaration, which emphasised extending human rights and the taking of positions on matters affecting local, regional and global issues. The declaration lent its support for cities, as spaces for coexistence, developing with equality and diversity, and therefore called on local governments to undertake to promote public policies that guarantee the full enjoyment of rights on the part of the citizens living there.

Mercociudades brought together the chief executives, council chairs, mayors, and managers of more than 280 cities in the region, representatives of social organisations, academic institutions and a range of regional and world organisations to debate current social integration issues and redefine a joint agenda to deepen and broaden the bases for sustaining the integration process after almost twenty years of working together.
