Right to the City: a strong message on World Habitat Day

The Global Platform for the Right to the City recalls, before the international community, the importance of a joint effort at global and local level to achieve more just, democratic and sustainable cities through the Right to the City.

Today, on the occasion of World Habitat Day, celebrated in New York along with the international community, the Global Platform for the Right to the City advocates for the inclusion of the Right to the City as one of the cornerstones of New Urban Agenda (to be defined in the Habitat III Summit) and for a more active participation of local governments and civil society in the definition and implementation of the principles of this Agenda.

Thus, the Platform has produced a Declaration which recalls this important advocacy work and analyzes four main areas to be encompassed by the results of the Habitat III Summit: (1) Right to the City principles, (2) Role local governments, (3) housing and secure of tenure and (4) jobs and livelihoods.

In this context, a debate will take place today, organized by the ECOSOC (Economic and Social Council), UN-Habitat, UCLG (United Cities and Local Governments) and other organizations. The representative of the Platform at this meeting will be Professor Michael Cohen from "The New School".
