The Executive Bureau that took place from 17th to 19th June in Liverpool, agreed to open a call encouraging candidatures from the Latin American region. Due to the local elections that took place in Ecuador, there is a vacancy in the UCLG Presidency.
United Cities and Local Governments has a Presidency composed of up to 6 members. The Presidency is the principal representative of the World Organization and is elected by its World Council.
The Presidency, comprising the President and up to 5 Co-Presidents, is elected by the World Council from among Local Government members for a renewable term between two ordinary sessions of the General Assembly. At least one of the above office-holders must be from an individual Local Government member, at least one from a national association and at least one from a member of the Metropolitan Section. It is strongly encouraged to take the principle of gender balance into account.
Candidacies must be presented by mid-October 2014. After validation of criteria, they will be posted on the United Cities and Local Governments website www.uclg.org. The election will take place at the World Council on 26th November 2014 in Haikou.
Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates should represent a paying Local Government member of UCLG.
- The member represented by the candidate will be up to date with the payment of their membership fees.
- According to the UCLG Constitution, the members of the Presidency shall hold a local electoral mandate. They must also be at the head of a) a local or regional government or b) a national association of local or regional governments.
- In order to advance in gender balances, female participation is strongly encouraged.
Candidacies must include:
- Short biography
- Manifesto or motivation letter
- Statements of support from 6 different Local Government members from at least 3 different Sections
