When adopting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), leaders from every corner of the globe made 1948 a milestone year. Today, due to the proximity with people’s lives, the role of Local and Regional Governments (LRGs) is fundamental to respect, protect and fulfill the rights of all, regardless of gender, race, religion, or other status.
At the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) are pleased to invite all LRGs around the world to commemorate this special year through the Human Rights 75 Initiative.
In particular, we invite you to take an active part in the Human Rights 75 thematic spotlights, showcasing the commitment of your LRG to the Universal Declaration. We have prepared for you the following:
- A social media toolkit to expand outreach and communication on LRGs action in this commemoration.
- A short document with key information on the Universal Declaration.
- You can also find a letter co-signed by Mr. Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Ms. Emilia Saiz, Secretary General of UCLG. Here you can find more solidarity activities to join the commemoration.
This initiative is implemented in the framework of the cooperation agreement between UCLG and the OHCHR. It builds on the achievements of the Global Campaign “10, 100, 1000 Human Rights Cities and Territories by 2030” launched by the UCLG Committee on Social Inclusion, Participatory Democracy and Human Rights.
We count on you to join us in commemorating this milestone moment for humanity and the cause of human rights.
