Why are local and regional governments essential to promoting, fulfilling, and respecting human rights?
Because we are the level of government closest to the people and have the responsibility to design and implement public policies, programmes, and services that ensure the respect, protection, and enjoyment of human rights. Moreover, local governments are able to respond directly to people's needs and prevent situations of discrimination, violence, inequality, and many other forms of exclusion.
Why are human rights relevant values and a useful framework for guiding local action?
Because human rights guide government decisions and actions to ensure they are fair, inclusive, and respectful of the dignity of every person. They also provide a framework that promotes equality, non-discrimination, citizen participation, and the well-being of the community.
The Municipality of Tláhuac will join the "10, 100, 1,000 Human Rights Cities and Territories by 2030" campaign to strengthen its commitment to the promotion, protection, and respect of human rights. Through this initiative, it will promote activities that contribute to building a more just, inclusive, participatory, and rights-respecting community, where the dignity of every person is upheld. It also seeks to foster cooperation and the exchange of good practices with other local governments in order to strengthen a culture of human rights across all areas of public life.
1) Human Rights Education
The Municipality of Tláhuac implements workshops, talks, and awareness-raising campaigns aimed at public servants, students, teachers, parents, older adults, and the general public. These initiatives seek to strengthen knowledge, promotion, and the exercise of human rights while fostering equality, non-discrimination, inclusion, and a culture of peace.
2) Women's Rights
Through the Brigada Violeta (Violet Brigade) strategy, the Municipality of Tláhuac carries out prevention, guidance, and referral activities for cases of violence against women. It also provides talks on substantive equality, the prevention of gender-based violence, the use of the Violentómetro (Violence Meter), and access to support services, helping to ensure women's right to a life free from violence.
3) Youth and Children
The Municipality implements programmes and workshops for children and adolescents to strengthen peaceful coexistence, prevent school bullying, cyberbullying, and other forms of violence, while promoting respect for human rights, participation, inclusion, and the holistic development of this segment of the population.
