VISION AS HUMAN RIGHTS CITY / TERRITORY

In a society marked by fragmentation and division, where the fear of climate collapse paralyzes action and imagination, Grenoble—European Green Capital 2022—chooses to nurture a sense of “we.” Nurturing freedoms, remaining faithful to universalism, and defending hospitality are the City’s commitments in its public policies.

Grenoble is a land of struggle for equality, the freedom of contraception and abortion, and the rights of LGBT+ people. The City of Grenoble is mobilized and takes action against all forms of discrimination that Grenoble’s residents and even municipal employees may face. This work is structured around four major themes: fighting discrimination related to HIV/AIDS, combating LGBTI+phobia, fighting against racism and other forms of discrimination, and promoting gender and sexual equality.

Enriched by the cultures of the entire world, Grenoble is a mosaic and creole city. Fostering international exchanges—especially through its International House—also contributes to Grenoble’s openness to the world. Grenoble is committed to implementing an international policy oriented toward ecological transition, citizen participation, and based on the values of peace and the defense of human rights.

Furthermore, Grenoble was ranked among the top 5 most accessible cities in Europe for 2023 (Access City Award).

MOTIVATIONS TO JOIN THE CAMPAIGN

To convey a triple message internationally:

  • Pay special attention to the role of local governments in two specific thematic areas: the fight against inequalities and the fight against discrimination.

  • Promote democratic strengthening as a pillar of human rights implementation: improving citizen relations and democratic participation regarding rights, deepening cooperation with civil society and its organizations, and improving transparency and public action evaluation mechanisms.

  • Recognition of the need for local governments to access more resources to implement human rights locally.
