VISION AS HUMAN RIGHTS CITY / TERRITORY

Local governments have a relevant role in the defense and protection of human rights in our cities, and this is already a reality that we are putting into practice in our local action as a fundamental pillar.

The problems affecting local governments are increasingly global, and solutions must come from our institutions as the administrations closest to the citizens in all their diversity, committed to guaranteeing the well-being of all residents and the rights that belong to and protect them.

The Getafe Municipality has been working on various projects and activities from the Social Welfare and Cooperation delegation, in collaboration with other municipal departments such as Coexistence and Citizen Security, and jointly with social entities in the locality, to recognize and raise awareness of all the diversities existing in our city—in all their manifestations, whether cultural, origin, race, religion, or sexual and functional diversity—that enrich us as citizens, with the sole objective of welcoming and integrating everyone on equal footing.

Additionally, we have addressed diversity from the prevention of situations that threaten vulnerable groups or people affected by racist, xenophobic, or sexist discrimination that can lead to hate speech or crimes, where we must intervene as guarantors of the rights that protect us all, without distinction.

MOTIVATIONS TO JOIN THE CAMPAIGN

It is essential to continue working from local governments to eradicate any form of discrimination. The COVID-19 crisis was fueled by structural discrimination and racism. We must act against inequalities, promoting and protecting economic, social, and cultural rights. We must foster participation and solidarity because we are all in this together: governments, citizens, civil society, and also the private sector. Everyone has a role to play in ensuring human rights are respected, and without the central role of local governments, this would not be possible. Finally, promoting sustainable development. We need sustainable development for people and the planet. Human rights, the 2030 Agenda, and the Paris Agreement are the pillars of a recovery that leaves no one behind. Human rights are the basis of the Sustainable Development Goals. Progress on all SDGs drives human rights forward, just as progress in human rights drives these goals. This campaign is an opportunity and an additional tool to achieve a much fairer and more equal world.
