The United Nations Agency in charge of the Habitat Agenda (UN-Habitat) is holding its 24th Governing Council on 15-19 April in Nairobi, Kenya.
This year’s Council will take as its special theme: ‘Sustainable urban development: the role of cities in creating improved economic opportunities for all, with special references to youth and gender”.
As it is traditionally the case, UCLG will facilitate local government representation in the Governing Council. The following areas and events are worth highlighting.
UNACLA
The meeting of the United Nations Advisory Committee for Local Authorities will take place on Sunday 14 April. This meeting is by invitation and open only to members of the Committee. Should you be interested in attending, please contact the UCLG World Secretariat.
The Committee, chaired by Kadir Topbaş, Mayor of Istanbul and President of UCLG, will present the outcomes of the 2011/2012 annual thematic focus on Transport and Mobility and have a thematic meeting to launch the 2012/2013 annual focus on Job Creation and Local Productivity.
GENDER
This Council’s topic will be addressed on a Dialogue with Habitat Partners (among which Local Authorities) to be held on Wednesday 17 April.
RESOLUTIONS
As you know, UN-Habitat is the only UN Agency to date where local authorities participate as full partners in the deliberations of its governing council.
The UN-Habitat Governing Council will be submitted resolutions for adoption that are of crucial importance for local and regional governments. The key draft resolutions at this Council’s session will be on:
- 3rd United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development
- Gender equality and empowerment of women in sustainable urban development
