The International Centre LSE Cities (at the London School of Economics), in collaboration with UN-Habitat and the Committee on Decentralisation and Local Self-Government of UCLG launched an online Platform on Urban Governance worldwide. The first results are already available!
The Urban Governance Platform was based on the first phase of a survey, which processed self-reported data provided by 78 participating cities, creating a comparative, interactive and innovative mapping of the different variables that compose the process of local governance.
The initiative began in 2014, during the Urban Age Conference in Delhi, India, which brought together a wide range of policy makers, academics and experts on local governance to discuss the state of urban governance worldwide.
The objectives of this comparative study are to better clarify the complex understanding of how cities are governed and identify the main challenges of contemporary governance around the world. In addition, through these data, it is possible to stimulate a fruitful exchange of good practices between cities, thus increasing their ability to apply new governance formulas in their own local contexts.
Among the wide variety of information that can be found on the platform, visitors can access data on the influence of informal economy, popular participation in public policies, leadership in the transport sector; ability of cities’ habitants to borrow money, amount of land under government ownership; distribution of national, regional and municipal powers, among others.
To participate, local governments can show their interest by sending an email to [email protected]. The deadline for submission of the questionnaire responses is 30 September 2015.
